I will be attending Novell’s Virtualization Tour in Berjaya Times Square Hotel & Convention Center, Kuala Lumpur.

I have been in Novell’s SLES10 launching in Malaysia and I was impressed a lot.

Virtualization is a proven technology that pools and shares resources to reduce costs and optimize utilization, even under changing demands. Forward-looking enterprises are choosing server virtualization as a way to maximize hardware utilization, eliminate server sprawl and dynamically respond to rapidly changing resource and application needs.

Novell VirtualizationJoin us for this free seminar and learn how powerful virtualization technology on low-cost Linux servers can help you:

  • Freely migrate virtual machines

Quick Office Infrastructure Setup

without comments

If you don’t have time or don’t have much expertise to setup your office infrastructure eBox is exactly what you need. It’s based on rock solid Debian. Featuring most common softwares you need to run your office, it comes in one single 440MB CD. If it doesn’t meet your software requirements, you can easily develop your own module or even better sponsor one module! It will definitely be cheaper and you will be supporting Open Source!

Recently Matt Willsher developed a subversion module for eBox. Here’s what he says about eBox:

I was looking to set up a server at home and had evaluated various platforms for the task. Having built a box from the ground up for the job, I got tired of the amount of work required to add new services and servers, especially as the machine grew in complexity – LDAP, Kerberos, Netatalk, Samba. Adding new things got trickier. So I tried eBox and was very impressed with the ethos of the project – the ease of use, it being open source, uniformity of data use and broad range of well though out features. Plus I’ve never configured Samba so quickly!

One thing was missing for me though – Netatalk integration. I’ve been wanting to get back into coding for a while as I’ve not done any in some time. The OO nature of the framework was ideal and Perl is a language I used some time ago, so I thought I’d give it a go.

I think a basic office infrastructure must consist of:

  1. Firewall
  2. DHCP
  3. E-Mail
  4. Proxy

eBox covers all of that and also it features:

  1. IP Management
  2. Network Management
  3. Proxy/Content Filter
  4. LDAP
  5. Windows PDC
  6. File/Print Server
  7. Jabber Server
  8. DNS Cache
  9. Date & Time Server
  10. Virtual LANs

Setup is easy and quick, after installing you can manage it through a user friendly web interface.

It’s in very early days but I strongly believe that it will be very successful project. May be it’s also good chance to start a new business just like Endian did with IPCop and some other softwares bundling together.

Upgrade your wordpress, don’t get hacked!

without comments

I don’t want to be repetitive but it’s very important for you to upgrade to wordpress 2.2. You must make it a rule of thumb to upgrade to a newer version of wordpress whenever the new version is out. Especially when the updates covers security holes in the application.

Actually, it’s applicable to any softwares out there, it’s always safe to update your software as often as possible. This will enable you to stay secure and up to date with the latest features of the software.

Recently, Hong Kiat was hacked, he blogs about it on his blog here. His blog was hacked because he didn’t upgrade his wordpress to a newer version. Because of this he lost 2-3 days posts. Luckily he did back up his blog so he did not lose much content.

To stay informed on the updates from Wordpress subscribe to their announcement list here.

To have your wordpress blog backup, automate backup procedure install this plugin.

When is it right time to have a good vacation?

with one comment

I’ve been working for the past few years without having a proper vacation. I am now resigning and starting my new job. Initially, I was planning to have a break in between but it seems like to be impossible now.

The last get away was more then 6-7 months ago when I visited Cherating with my family. The first night we stayed in a cheap and dirty chalet because it was raining and it was too late. After long hours on the road my kid was just barely standing. The next morning we found Cherating Bay Resort where we rented 3 room apartment.

Wherever possible I like to stay in resorts, condo or rent a house, chalet. This is always cheaper then hotel rooms, more privacy and more convenient for family guys like me.

If you happened to be visiting Maui, Hawaii, consider staying in Wailea condos.

Wailea condosBeautifully designed and having a great view to the beach, Wailea condos has all the comforts you may need from aircond to the fridge, and if you are blogger you may enjoy the high speed internet they provide.

Three bedroom apartment can accomadate maximum 6 guests which is quite attractive, has full kitchen – you can cook in there, 2 bathrooms.

Additional features include shared pool,  ocean view, BBQ, Room Service, Business Center, Kids Okay (I guess it means kids are welcome or kids are safe), fitness center and many other features.

So if you have made your dream come true and visiting Hawaii, don’t miss and stay at  Wailea condos!

As for me, having a vacation is still a dream to come true.

Hong Kiat recently has resigned from his day job and he mentioned being a ProBlogger. It wasn’t too long and his blog has been hacked. The message on his blog says to think all over again… Anyways, you can visit hongkiat.com/blog and see it for yourself!

Hong Kiat

I think, probably Hong Kiat didn’t upgrade the latest upgrade of wordpress which was compulsory. Or may be he just pissed off some geeks. Well, we will know when Hong Kiat will restore his blog and will publish his thoughts.
