Is it the begining of Gentoo end?

I was so saddened to read that Daniel Robbins, Founder of Gentoo Linux, returning to Gentoo project after working in Microsoft’s Platform Strategy Group had a not so much of a good welcome by project developers. Because of that personal attacks, Daniel had to quit the project within a few days.

Recently, he blogged about his feelings and thoughts on Gentoo project without knowing that he is still officially the President of the Foundation. He thinks that the community leaders haven’t performed well enough after he has left the project. In his post he thinks it would be fair enough that he is to take the Gentoo projects belongings. That has also rose a lot of discussions and arguments.

Personally, I think Daniel has done hell of a job and I really thinks he has FULL rights for Gentoo as a project. I think very few people has done this big and so state of the art software.

So I’m done setting up, I logged in. I see Daily Target list, Dream Catcher, Mental Lock box, Delegation list and Observation log. All of these are here for you to learn how to spend less time doing more.

Next generation file system for Mac OS from Sun

Jonathan Schwartz recently revealed that his company, Sun, was working on a new file system - ZFS. They made it open source and he said that ZFS will be integrated into Mac OS.Jonathan Schwartz

Not only it is made for Mac OS but it’s available for Linux, BSDs, Solaris.

Here’s the extract from their website:

“We’ve rethought everything and rearchitected it,” says Jeff Bonwick, Sun distinguished engineer and chief architect of ZFS. “We’ve thrown away 20 years of old technology that was based on assumptions no longer true today.”

ZFS is supported on both SPARC and x86 platforms. More important, ZFS is endian-neutral. You can easily move disks from a SPARC server to an x86 server. Neither architecture pays a byte-swapping tax due to Sun’s patent-pending “adaptive endian-ness” technology, which is unique to ZFS. And you don’t have to worry about migration. Sun continues to support the UFS file system.

Sun introduced new server Sun Fire X4500,Project Thumper which will be making use of ZFS for their data storage needs.

How to make Windows XP faster

Microsoft released it’s latest version of Windows - Vista recently. But IT professionals criticized Vista in many ways. Some of them even setup BadVista.Org website. :)

Anyways, this post isn’t about Vista, it’s about XP. Let’s take a look how we can speed up working XP machine by tweaking the OS and settings.

So by right clicking My Computer on the desktop, clicking Properties, Advanced tab and going for Performance \ Settings, pick Adjust for best Performance. You can also increase the Paging file size. This can be done by selecting Advanced tab. You can set the Paging file size somewhere between 512MB and 1GB depending on your RAM installed. Read more
